Giving Grave News to Kids: Considerations, Strategies, and Best Practices (2 CEs)

This event offers 2 CEs for PA professionals holding LSW, LCSW, LPC, LMFT licenses. This event is also approved for 2 CEs for PA Licensed Psychologists.

Maybe you have a terminal illness that no one has told you about, or your mommy is dying, or you will live with a chronic illness forever, or your sibling has died; these messages are particularly challenging for providers and caregivers to effectively share with youth. This training is offered by two professionals who have had extensive experience relaying these grave sentiments to youth in ways that fosters empowerment, and agency while preserving hope.

Together, they will share best practices, strategies, and language to support other providers with everything they have learned along the way. One provider, with expertise in trauma and human development, will also support participants in tailoring their efforts for the realities that affect different age groups across the spectrum of youth.

By the end of this training participants will be able to: 

1. Identify the critical aspects of grave information that should be mitigated and safeguarded for the wellbeing of youth who will receive it.      

2. Relay at least 3 provider or parental reactions that can derail or sabotage the wellbeing or hope of youth receiving grave news.    

3. Explain how they can integrate the content into their efforts to empower youth who may be receiving grave news.

This session will be co-facilitated by Trudy Tchume-Johnson MSW, LSW.

Trudy is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 25 years of experience in medical social work, with a special focus on sickle cell disease (SCD). Her work at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has centered on psychosocial care, advocacy, transition of care, program development, and advancing equitable care for children and families living with SCD.

Laura is Principal Partner of Hindsight Consulting Group, LLC, a national speaker, and trauma specialist who serves as an expert witness in criminal, civil, and regulatory cases. Laura’s work also includes a small psychotherapy practice, consultation services, and executive coaching.

Laura is an alumna and part-time lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice for the last 19 years, and at Bryn Mawr’s School of Social Work and Social Research for the past 8 years. There she curates and instructs post-graduate courses on ethics, trauma, and perinatal grief.
